This season, for the first time, those who have read the published A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George RR Martin are basically all caught up with the TV show — barring some storylines with the Greyjoys — and are now in the dark as much as everyone else. That’s going to make the wait for season six or Winds of Winter, the next Martin novel, the absolute worst.

Theme interpretations

In 2013, vocalist Marissa Nadler performed my absolute favorite a cappella rendition of the theme to Game of Thrones. This track was recorded and produced by Ryan Walsh, who has had his own indie band in Boston since 2005 called Hallelujah The Hills. To be very, very, very simplistic about it, the oud is the Turkish (or Arabic or North African) version of the European lute. It’s a stringed instrument that tackles the melodies in this version of the Game of Thrones theme. The performer who made it, Ahmed Alshaiba, is from Yemen but lives in New York and taught himself how to play the oud, possibly so he could start his YouTube channel of pop music oud covers.

This ska version of the Game of Thrones theme was written and performed by the Pannonia Allstars Ska Orchestra (PASO), an Eastern European ska band that is generally worth your time if you like your laid back ska beats with a twist of Hungarian influence. You can check them out on Facebook.

This isn’t so much a Game of Thrones rap as it is A Song of Ice and Fire rap as rhyme artist Dominik Omega makes very clear at the beginning of the track when he talks about waiting years for the last book, A Dance with Dragons, to release. Show-watchers won’t be left behind anymore, as we’re basically rapping about the same things in our spare time — just not as good as Dominik and not with sick beats by The Arcitype.

Blizzar is a guy who likes Game of Thrones and raps about it. He also raps about MSU basketball. Little else is known, but you can enjoy him in costumes and follow him on Twitter now.

Songs from the show

Karliene is a vocalist that has a fantasy lit bent to some of her fan-requested work. By far my favorite is her interpretation of “The Bear and the Maiden Fair,” a song that appears in the Game of Thrones novels in its entirety, but was only briefly chanted on the show. Now every time I hear it, I picture slow motion shots of Gwendoline Christie fighting a bear. Thanks, HBO.

Remember that song Bronn was signing this season on the horse ride to Dorne, and Jamie tells him to shut up? Then we get to hear the end of the song (which Bronn insists is the important part) the next episode when he’s in the prison and about to be seduced by a Sand Snake? Well, if you wanted to hear the whole song as it appears in the novels, Youtube vocalist Valentine Wolfe has you covered.

The Rains of Castamere was traumatically played during and over the credits of the show. One of these versions was by The National, the other by the Icelandic band Sigor Ros. Both versions are haunting and remind us of dead babies. This remix, by electronic artist In Alium, is haunting and doesn’t immediately remind us of dead babies. That makes it incrementally better.

Original songs about Game of Thrones

Irish musician-producer Gavin Dunne has a project called Miracle of Sound. He composes and performs original songs based on TV, movies, and video games. He gets two songs on this list because he’s out there making music about the characters of Westeros. There aren’t any meta references here: the first song, called “The Half Man’s Song,” is a song in praise of Tyrion’s character.

The second song, “When Winter Comes,” is a warning about just that. These are notable because this is how songs are used in the novel, as tales of great deeds or general warnings passed between generations. Why should the books get all the good songs about Westeros?

Game Of Thrones Main Theme

This is technically a cheat, as this song by Atlanta, Georgia heavy metal band Mastodon is on the HBO sanctioned mixtape of songs inspired by Game of Thrones, Catch the Throne Vol. 2. The reason it is notable this season is because it is about White Walkers, and the band appeared in this season’s phenomenal “Hardhome” episode where the White Walkers massacred the Wildlings. Basically, Mastodon has the musical lockdown on White Walker material.
